WHY KINDRID

What a retained search consultancy offers that a contingent recruiter does not.

The structure of the engagement changes what is possible. Here is what that means in practice for legal sector hiring in Hong Kong.

THE CASE FOR RETAINED SEARCH

Six things that change when the model changes

Time spent on the brief

When a firm is paid to fill the role rather than just find names, time spent understanding the brief properly has a return. We build scope documents with clients — not just job descriptions.

Real market mapping

We document who is in the relevant candidate pool, where they are, and what the realistic demand picture looks like. That information belongs to the client — they receive it in writing at the start of the engagement.

Structured candidate assessment

We run structured conversations with candidates and write up what we hear. Clients receive written assessment notes, not verbal summaries, which makes comparison across candidates more reliable.

Candidate handling that reflects on you

How candidates experience a search says something about the organization. We brief candidates fully, keep them informed, and close out properly with everyone approached — including those who are not taken forward.

Honest progress reporting

We report what we find, including where the search is not proceeding as expected and what the likely cause is. That information is more useful than reassurance — and it arrives while there is still time to adjust.

A record that outlasts the search

The written outputs from an engagement — scope, market map, assessment notes — give the client an organized record of the process. That is useful if the role needs to be filled again or the search is reviewed internally.

IN DEPTH

What each advantage means in practice

01 — SECTOR EXPERTISE

Knowledge of Hong Kong legal hiring, not just recruitment practice

Our team's background is in the legal sector specifically — not recruitment broadly. That means we recognize which organizations are likely to release senior people, which roles attract genuine interest versus polite consideration, and what a realistic compensation package looks like for a given profile in this market.

That knowledge shapes the brief, the market map, and the candidate conversations. It is harder to acquire than general recruitment technique and degrades quickly if you step outside the sector — which is why we do not.

  • Accurate role calibration from day one
  • Relevant candidate relationships already in place
  • Credible market context in written reports
  • No learning curve on sector norms at your expense
  • Scope document agreed before any outreach begins
  • Progress reports at defined points in the engagement
  • Written assessment notes for all candidates presented
  • Final search record delivered at close
02 — PROCESS DISCIPLINE

A defined process with written outputs at each stage

Each Kindrid search follows the same staged structure: brief development, market mapping, candidate engagement, assessment, and close. Those stages are not marketing language — they correspond to distinct deliverables that the client receives in writing.

Process discipline is what allows a search to be reviewed, corrected, and learned from. Without it, a search is largely opaque — the client knows approximately what happened but cannot easily identify where things went well or where they did not.

03 — CLIENT SERVICE

A single point of contact who knows the brief

Kindrid is a small firm. The person who takes your brief is the person who runs the search. There is no handoff to a researcher after the pitch, no account manager who relays messages between you and the person doing the work.

That proximity means the brief stays accurate, feedback from interviews reaches the right person immediately, and any adjustment to the search can happen quickly and without friction.

  • No handoff between pitch and delivery
  • Direct access throughout the engagement
  • Brief held accurately across the full search
  • Feedback loops that work in both directions

COMPARISON

Retained search vs. standard contingent recruitment

TYPICAL CONTINGENT RECRUITER

  • Brief taken quickly; work starts before scope is agreed
  • Multiple competing searches run in parallel
  • CVs submitted with limited written assessment
  • Candidate handling varies and is hard for the client to see
  • No obligation to complete the search
  • Market information rarely documented for the client

KINDRID — RETAINED ENGAGEMENT

  • Scope document produced and agreed before outreach begins
  • One search at a time — full attention on your role
  • Written assessment notes for every candidate presented
  • Candidates briefed and managed with care at every stage
  • Committed to completing the search as scoped
  • Market map and search record delivered in writing

WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT

Specific things we do that most search firms do not

We write scope documents, not just job descriptions

Before outreach begins, we produce a working scope document that covers the role, the organizational context, what success looks like in the first two years, and what the realistic candidate market is. That document is shared with the client and forms the basis for the search.

We tell candidates who the client is before asking them to proceed

Candidates are briefed on the organization before we ask for their interest or their CV. This is standard in our process, not an exception made for very senior roles. It treats candidates as people making a considered decision, not as applications to be processed.

We push back when the brief is unrealistic

If the compensation is below what the profile commands, or the brief is combining roles that the market treats as separate, we say so at the start — with evidence. A search that starts on an unrealistic brief wastes everyone's time, and the discovery of that problem late in the process is harder to recover from.

Advisory services extend beyond search

Not every hiring problem requires a search. Our process review and candidate experience services exist for organizations that want to look at how their internal hiring function works — whether ahead of building it out, or because recent searches have not gone as expected.
